Malawian Girls Take Charge of Their Health with Sustainable Periods Project

Girls on the Lead, a Malawian feminist organization funded by the AHRN Foundation, tackled the critical issue of menstrual hygiene through their impactful “Sustainable Periods Project.” Implemented from October 9th to November 25th, 2023, the project aimed to empower women and girls while promoting environmental responsibility.

Empowering and Educating

The Sustainable Periods Project had clear goals: Menstrual Hygiene Empowerment, Eco-Friendly Choices, Community Education, and Skill Development. By distributing 100 reusable pads, the project ensured immediate access to sustainable menstrual hygiene products for many. Additionally, DIY training sessions equipped participants with the knowledge and skills to create their own reusable pads, fostering self-sufficiency in the long run.

Breaking the Stigma

The project extended beyond product distribution. Through workshops and awareness campaigns, Girls on the Lead addressed the social aspect of menstruation. By educating the community about menstrual health, sustainable practices, and the benefits of reusable pads, the project aimed to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and create a more positive narrative.

Collaboration for Lasting Impact

The initiative didn’t operate in isolation. Girls on the Lead strategically collaborated with local organizations and leaders to foster community engagement. This collaboration ensured a wider reach for the project’s message and facilitated the project’s long-term impact. Finally, by providing ongoing support and resources, Girls on the Lead ensured the participants could continue practicing sustainable menstrual hygiene and share their newly acquired skills.

The Sustainable Periods Project exemplifies how Girls on the Lead is making a positive difference in the lives of Malawian women and girls. By addressing both the practical and social aspects of menstrual hygiene, the project empowers women and girls while promoting environmental responsibility within the community.
